Poisoning the well?

OK, just a quickie. I didn’t even read the article, but I thought this was interesting.
Take a look at this teaser headline from Slate Magazine:
The first thing that popped into my mind was the image of a nervous-but-determined beachgoer tentatively tiptoeing into the surf, when a companion wonders aloud, “I wonder if there are any sharks in these waters?”
Even if this query concludes with, “Nah, the odds are against it, there aren’t any sharks for miles around,” it’s too late: the seed has already been planted in very fertile soil.
Something to think about, at least.
